| Bio: | Uncanon history Hojo is being pulled from a time in the distant past, when Shinra Weapons Company had just become Shinra Electric Company, with the advent of mako power. At the time, Midgar was a fragmented consolidation of eight smaller towns, the plate still under construction. The rest of this is uncanon. A young Hojo, fascinated with modern science and modern medicine, disciplines that could not be learnt in Wutai, moved to the continent amidst much scorn and anger from his traditional family. They saw it as a betrayal and a defection. Hojo saw them as backward and unable to embrace the potential of the new era. His road brought him to Midgar, where, after working for a few years, he scraped together enough to enter Midgar University’s medicine faculty. His stellar grades rapidly earned him a scholarship and a position as a research assistant in the university. That was about the time that signs of a strange new disease began appearing amidst the poorer sections of the populace. Few were interested in conducting research into it; the ones affected were the poorest of the poor, would never be able to afford treatment, even if such a thing was invented. This phenomena did not escape Hojo’s notice, however. His scientific curiosity was piqued; he cared little for money, and saw this rather as a field where he could push the boundaries of human knowledge. Months of detailed research eventually led to a startling discovery – that this disease was the result of mako poisoning, caused by the fallout from the new reactors. The first to feel the effects were, of course, those living in the slums at the foot of those very reactors, drinking contaminated water and well within the radiation footprint. Already on the roll, Hojo pursued the next logical step – the creation of a cure or a vaccine. Some part in him was moved by the plight of the sufferers; many of them were Wutainese immigrants like him, arriving penniless at the mainland and forced into squalor, overlooked by the corporate gods. Here, Hojo saw in equal parts a chance to save these people, to win the recognition of his peers, and to pursue this most fascinating of research fields. Efforts to produce a cure proved useless. Efforts to produce a vaccine proved worse than useless, resulting in mutations and gruesome deaths. When the first fatalities appeared, the university refused to push ahead with research, content to return to animal testing. Hojo, young and impatient, saw this as a massive step backwards, a major impediment to his work. He continued it in secret, convinced that a vaccine was the key – exposure to mako in small quantities would eventually build up mako tolerance to a level where people could survive safely in the contamination shadow of the reactors. The chief difficulty lay in finding a way to administer mako in a weakened form that would not kill the subject, and in Hojo’s view, deaths were inevitable in the search for this cure. Sacrifices had to be made for the greater good. Eventually, mere steps from his goal, his work was discovered by the university, which promptly revoked his scholarship and expelled him. Furious and desperate, Hojo brought his research to Shinra Company itself. A young President Shinra, concerned by the potential scandal if this unwelcomed side effect of mako was discovered, sanctioned the continuation of Hojo’s research. The vaccine was eventually developed, and Hojo’s fame skyrocketed. He was conferred a full doctorate by rival Junon University, confirmed as a leading member of Shinra’s science department. (His professorship would only be conferred later; at this point, he is simply ‘Dr’.) By then, however, the damage had already been done. Cynical and embittered by his expulsion, Hojo turned his eyes solely towards science, abandoning any concern for the welfare of the human race. His research would later become the stepping stone for the SOLDIER project. Character’s personality This is the point from which Hojo is dragged. Widely recognised as the next biggest thing in science, Hojo has developed an arrogant streak a mile wide, and a general contempt for the world that he proved wrong. Convinced that the ends (i.e. furthering science) justifies the means (i.e. human experimentation), Hojo believes that ethics and morals are simply weak concepts get in the way of human potential. Unlike his older self, he has yet to develop the insanity, but he far from the most pleasant of people. Short-tempered and nasty, he has no tolerance for fools, or even those of average intelligence. Generally antisocial, he is the embodiment of the stereotypical geek, locked in his laboratory all day working on mad science, and forgetting about food or sleep. He is, however, still a college student / fresh graduate at heart, and can be persuaded to great mischief, particularly if it concerns sabotaging those he considers older, backward fools in power. And like any geek, he can still be impressed by a pretty Back on Gaia, he is close to Dr Gast Faremis, whom he met at college. Gast is older, and they don’t see eye to eye on a lot of things, but as long as the topics of human experimentation and Midgar U are avoided, they get along alright. Generally, Hojo is more human than his older incarnation. He’s more in tune with his feelings; he can be persuaded down from his vicious fits of anti-authoritarianism, and can become close to people, but such is his nature that getting close to him at all is a difficult process. And although he loves science, the pedestal he’s placed it on hasn’t reached orbital height yet. All that will come later. Along with the tentacles. He will also jab you with a syringe if you call him Wesley. His refusal to give his first name back in college led to his counterparts coining one for him, and on the first day during a new academic year, while the Professor was taking attendance, a classmate introduced him as Wesley. The name has stuck ever since. Hojo loathes it. Naturally, that’s what everyone calls him. Sample RP log: There had been no transition, no flash of light, no shaking of the earth. It was almost disappointing, Hojo reflected, but at the same time, it was intriguing. He was certain he was no longer in the Midgar he had known, if this was Midgar at all. The plate above certainly lent weight to that conclusion, but the reactors, the heart and soul of his research, were conspicuously absent. Disappointing to the part of him that, brought up on a diet of Midgarian movies, expected most major occurrences in life to be accompanied by a big bang. Disappointing to his inner scientist, which wanted observable evidence of the phenomena. Disappointing to his stomach, which had finally persuaded him to catch a bite from the company cafeteria after almost a day of neglecting to eat. But how intriguing. A major amount of energy must have been expended to bring him here, he reflected, yet there was no sign of it. Exit materia would have been his first conclusion, that highly experimental new form of it, but even that left light and radiation signatures. This had been smooth – between one step and the next, he’d been somehow plucked, transported through wormhole, and deposited ...here... with apparently no effort involved. How had they done it? It boggled the mind; here was power to rival ...no, to surpass even mako. Here was, potentially, the next great discovery, and his initial annoyance at being interrupted in the midst of his work was rapidly fading, to be replaced by that burning, restless need to seek out answers that lay beyond his grasp. He turned a circle, and turned again. There was still no sign of whatever had brought him here, and no sign of whatever would take him back. Curious. Physics was not his area of expertise, but he was brilliant – of course he knew everything – and knew well enough to expect that such a fold in space/time could not have been achieved without something far beyond their present means. His notebook was tugged from the folds of his labcoat before he registered it, the pen in his pocket flashing across the paper as he took notes. Even the air temperature felt normal, if a little chilly – he suspected a translocation to a colder region, since the temperature remained fairly stable. The smell, also. He had lived in the slums of one of the towns for almost a year, until he’d moved into college housing; he had worked, out of necessity, in the slums, to administer the vaccine and take samples... but it didn’t mean he liked it. He wrinkled his nose, propping his glasses up. And the lighting... pathetic, really. But the potential... potential was everything. He spared a mental sneer for the money grubbing executives back in Shinra, even as his pen raced across paper, jotting illegibly. He had heard the rumours of the newest, top secret project. Jenova, it was whispered in corners of the Shinra tower; corners that he really shouldn’t have had access to. A creature never seen before. A research project so classified that only four people knew of it. And they were thinking of giving to Gast. Morons. Retards. Gast was smart enough, Hojo supposed, but singularly lacking in vision. But he was older, they said. More experienced. Ha. As though experience counted for anything. Gast’s natural inhibitions would hold him back, stall the project. No... for the good of science, the project needed a leader who did not fear the unknown. A smile curved the corners of his face, cold and humourless. Here was his breakthrough, if he could just see it to fruition. The discovery that would seal his superiority, cement his chances of being awarded that particular contract. “Some see coincidence.” He smirked, glancing around this putrid, stinking city. “I see providence.” | ||||
